| We are trying to
preserve a specific flavor here
in Dark Horizon. Names are one thing
that we'd like to try to keep true
to the setting. These policies are
not mandatory... yet... but the
more folk who stray from it, the
less we're able to grant exceptions.
Name examples follow at
bottom of page.
First Names
The world of Dark Horizon is a
fantasy, but even so the general
flavor roughly adheres to a nautical
and colonial setting. Names like
Eldwyn, Grunsh, or Rivulus aren't
entirely in the right vein. If anything,
we prefer to see simple names like
Bill, Molly, or Samuel. More proper
names come from Suraal (ex. Abram,
Prudence), simpler, more humble
names are often resident to Gray
Harbor (ex. Tom, Jack, Mary). This
is by no means a hard and fast rule.
Less common sounding names with
long vowels (ex. Alaara, Oona, Sussaran)
may be older names originally formed
when 'Old Aiian' was spoken, and
are usually kept by noble or clerical
families, and not very often.
When choosing a name, try to pick
something that sounds like it would
be from The Crucible or some pirate
movie before making up a random
fantasy consonant-vowel conglomeration.
Again, not a rule, just a flavor-thing.
Surnames
Grey Harbor
--Many surnames in Grey Harbor are
taken from professions, as there
are quite a few folk who wished
to leave their past behind in Suraal
(for reasons shady or practical)
and there are also folk who simply
don't know their lineage. Ex. (Tom
Baker, John Woodwright, Samuel Miller,
Ben Waterman, Sally Fisher are all
good Grey Harbor names.)
Suraal
--Folk who are colonists direct
from Surelain society often have
names reflecting some ancestor's
occupation as well, but there are
also a smattering of family names
that come from the Old Aiian. Old
Aiian is characterized by long vowel
sounds, and lengthened s's. (Ex.
Tobias Aarenay, Bethany Oorless,
Johnathan Suraay. Typically names
which come from the old Aiian are
held by families who have some sort
of higher-status lineage, are better
off in society, or are related to
a clergical or noble bloodline.
