As
a people dependant on the sea, the
Aiians have become quite adept at
all matters of ship-building and
seafaring. Though the Grey Harbor
colony by no means rivals the ship-building
capability of the homeland, there
is nevertheless a shipyard supported
by the colony, and many smaller
craft either imported or constructed
by industrious colonists.
The
waters of Logan's Bay are often
filled with rowboats and small sailing
craft that almost never leave the
protected waters of the bay. The
long, c-shaped promontory of Opal
Point (upon which sits the Opal
Point Lighthouse) prevents much
of the force of the sea from entering
the bay, allowing for all measure
of slap-dash craft to ply its waters.
For
some, it is even easier to avoid
the salt-water altogether, and simply
fish the small lake on the northwest
edge of Gray Harbor. A cluster of
rowboats and dinghies can often
be seen at the edge of its waters.
For
the more industrious (and wealthy)
small schooners, sloops, clippers,
and other medium sized craft are
occasionally taken out to sea, if
for nothing else than a chance at
trolling the rougher waters for
a catch no bay-hugger could boast.
Some serious colony fishermen, or
families, boast such craft, and
local contingents of Surelain companies
may possess their own small craft
as well.
Longer
sea voyages are difficult in smaller
craft, as the buffeting of the salt
waves and the various dangers of
the expansive waters have claimed
more than a few sorry souls. Most
sensible folk would not even think
of traversing the sea itself in
anything smaller than the standard
of Aiian seafaring, the ocean-going
Greatship.
A
greatship is truly a sight to behold,
the deck rising a good thirty feet
from the waterline, and the huge
sails filling the sky above it.
Greatships are equipped to handle
the seas, and are often armed to
fend off whales and other sea monsters
both known and unknown.
Greatships
are costly, and are almost entirely
owned by well-to-do organizations
based in Surelain. The Navy Surelain
commands nine greatships at current,
the Black Watch commands three.
Hasparth's Men boast two Greatships,
and the Crimson Tide Four.
It
has been rumored that there is a
roving Greatship that never puts
into any dock. The 'Abby Serene'
was its name, though few know what
it is called now. There is little
knowledge of the fabled Lurenite
Fleet, but nearly every old seadog
confirms that the Abby Serene is
its flagship. One thing can be certain,
any sailor who values his life will
flee at the sight of its dark prow.
It is the dream
